First off, thank you Krystal, for allowing me to drop in to chat about NOBODY’S ANGEL, my latest release from Carina Press, and the first book in The Earth Angels series!
The idea for The Earth Angel series—and NOBODY’S ANGEL’s Zeke Reece in particular—came from a long-ago conversation my brother and I had about the Nephilim. In Biblical mythology, the Nephilim were the result of human/angel, erm, relations. Since a hybrid model wasn’t really part of “the big picture” down here on earth, they were wiped out in the Great Flood. End of story, right? Not exactly. The problem with the Nephilim extinction was that it wasn’t as complete as one might think. Goliath, after all, was supposed to be a result of an angelic/human unplanned pregnancy, so obviously at least one of the Nephilim escaped the smitey smackdown.
So, if there was one that slipped through the cracks, it only makes sense that there were probably more. Maybe a lot more.
That fantastic idea has always stuck with me, even though it’s hard for me to get my head around it. I mean, can you imagine what that would be like? To know you belonged to a race that wasn’t wanted or appreciated, and had been slated for godly extermination? What would that do to a person’s mind?
Enter Zeke Reece. Oh, how deliciously angsty he is, the big galoot. Thousands of years have come and gone since Zeke’s progenitor—an angel of death—got his groove on with a human woman. That means countless generations of human DNA have had a chance to dilute the more potent and otherworldly angelic gene. Living in modern-day San Francisco, Zeke pretty much blends into the crowd. That suits him just fine. More to the point, he identifies himself as being human…with a few minor extras, like a set of black wings and the ability to pass spiritual beings into the next life. He works tirelessly to keep his city free of spiritual disturbance, certain that if he just keeps his head down and his nose clean, he’ll be overlooked like his ancestors before him. It’s not much of a life, but the sad truth is, he doesn’t know how to live any other way.
The part that I loved most about Zeke was how relentlessly courageous this character showed himself to be. As I worked to flesh this guy out, he displayed true grit as he got up day after day and made his world a better place, whether it was through the day job as a paramedic, or his night gig as the masked urban legend who worked to defend those who couldn’t defend themselves. And all the while, even as he left more good than bad in his wake, he carried the unwavering belief that all of heaven hated his guts simply because he existed.
It should have broken him, that belief. It wouldhave broken a lesser man. But as Zeke evolved before my eyes, he wowed me time and again with his determination to just keep going, no matter the odds, and not give a damn what anyone thought of him. Not even the man upstairs.
Yet, Zeke is just about the most alone character I’ve ever come up with. After all, when you belong to a race that’s almost extinct—and very few believe said race existed in the first place—it’s kind of hard to make connections. Kendall Glynn is a perfect foil for this solitary hero; she’s feisty and intelligent, and when danger closes in she might shake with fear, but she refuses to cower. Instead, she uses what tools she has—her love of research and her insightful mind—to dig down to the source of deadly intent targeting her. When she uncovers a new kind of enemy that he never would have thought to look for, Zeke realizes he doesn’t always have to do everything alone. And even though heaven might hate his existence, he at last sees that Kendall can be trusted to love whatever, and whoever, he truly is.
I hope you enjoyed reading a bit about Zeke and Kendall, the two main characters in my latest release, NOBODY’S ANGEL.
