Llona is now attending the Lucent Academy. She doesn't have the normal experience of a high-school aged girl, but the reader should already expect this. The other auras are somewhat one-dimensional, leaving Llona to "make things happen" and "put herself out there." Llona is still focused on the Vykens who are trying to kill her; she wants to see if she can stop their threat on her existence, but will this act go against her heritage? Llona is supposed to be safe in her new school, but she is constantly under attack-particularly when she goes on her outside excursions. When Llona discovers a possible breach in the secutiry of the Aura Organization, she knows she must act fast. Can Llona handle the Vykens while making new friends and adjusting to life at Lucent Academy?
Llona's character is similar how she was in the first book. The reader will both root for her, when it comes to her bravery, and want to shake her, when she leaves school grounds and finds herself in trouble. May, Llona's best friend, returns to entertain the reader yet again. She adjusts to Lucent Academy at a much faster rate than Llona and will seem like a "mostly" regular school girl to the reader. The other characters add background information and help to push the plot along; I found it difficult to remember the individual students, they did not stand out to me. Aunt Sophia is still a worrier (and who could blame her!) and clearly loves Llona.
Overall, the plot was similar to the first in the series (and I recommend you read the first book before the second!), but still fun to read about. The dialogue between the characters will have the reader laughing and feeling closer to them. The ending was a little predictable, but will leave the reader looking forward to more from Rachel McClellan. Fractured Soul is recommended to young adult/teen readers.
